Ergonomic Solutions

A detailed ergonomic evaluation of some selected operations can be carried out with the following objectives in mind:

  • To assess the ergonomic risk factors at shop floor during actual operations with a view to minimize such risk factors through mechanization or automation for assessing work stress among operators
  • To assess the postural stress through RULA and REBA evaluation scales for understanding of factors involved in developing physiological fatigue among operators during actual industrial operations.
  • To assess the severity of risk in manual materials handling jobs using the lifting index calculated through NIOSH revised equation.
  • To suggest some remedial measures if need be to make operation safe and comfortable for sustenance and endurance as well as safety health and comfort of operators.
  • To record measurements of workstations and materials such as various heights, and distances of the machines and equipment, and suggesting modifications.
  • To evaluate office ergonomics, computer work stations and seating.

Training programs

Training programs on proper lifting techniques should cover the following topics:

  • Health risks of improper lifting, citing organizational case histories vs the benefits of proper lifting.
  • Basic anatomy of the spine, muscles, and joints of the trunk and the contributions of intra-abdominal pressure while lifting.
  • Body strengths and weaknesses—determining one’s own lifting capacity.
  • Physical factors that might contribute to an accident and how to avoid the unexpected.
  • Safe postures for lifting and timing for smooth, easy lifting.
  • Aids such as stages, platforms, or steps, trestles, shoulder pads, handles, & wheels.
  • Body responses—warning signals—to be aware of when lifting.
